32nd Session of UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

Delegates including Dr. Tae-hoon Ha, President of KICJ, attended the 32nd session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) held in Vienna, Austria from May 22 to May 26. This year's thematic discussion focused on enhancing the functioning of the criminal justice system to ensure access to justice and to realize a safe and secure society.

 

KICJ attended the plenary discussions and the UN Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network (PNI) Workshop. Addressing the plenary during the thematic discussion on item 5, Dr. Tae-hoon Ha spoke on the importance of restorative justice and outlined the efforts of the Korean government on establishing victim-oriented criminal justice policies. The PNI workshop, consisting of six presentations from experts, examined three main areas including identification and empowerment of victims, legal safeguard and protection in the criminal justice system, and realizing justice for a safe and secure society. Dr. Jea Hyen Soung, director of the Division of International Affairs at KICJ, spoke on restorative justice for juvenile offenders.

 

The 32nd session adopted five resolutions on anti-trafficking, reducing recidivism, equal access to justice for all, counter-terrorism, and contributions of the CCPCJ to the 2030 Agenda. A resolution following up on the 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and preparing for the upcoming 15th Crime Congress to be held in the United Arab Emirates in 2026 was also adopted.
