The suicide is a social phenomenon occurring when social bonding and combination between people were destroyed and the social interaction was not realized. The more people think they cannot trust each other in the society and cannot overcome their problem in public order, the more suicide occurs. The suicide can be also an impediment to the social unification. The fact that the increasing number of people are giving up their lives which is a basic human rights effects on the citizens by creating anxiety and weakening their social unification. Our national status that we have the highest level of suicide rate in entire world indicates that we have the most poor standard of social unification and combination.
As mentioned above, the study of the suicide must associate a general approach to see various aspects of whole societies and an analytic approach of specific cases and variables because suicide occurs in different problematic situations. This research has been accomplished to process both an index level of approach and a microscopic approach with respect to these view points.
Our role was that find the reason of accelerating suicide level in our society and improve those situations by helping people in need to choose alternative choices. Under those critical minds, this study was attempted to explore the social causes of suicide.
The regional distribution of suicide shows that a constant high level of suicide rates in Gangwon-do and Chungcheong-do and there was a rapid rise in Jeju-do recently. This could be a revealing point of vulnerability in Gangwon-do and Chungcheong-do and the rapid increase of the suicide level in Jeju Island indicates that the weakness of the local community has been occurred.
Particularly, elders in the countryside are more problematic as they are excluded from the primary economic distribution and have many limitations to get welfare system and medical services. These situations are going to be an evidence to explain the abnormally high suicide level of elders in South Korea.
There was no attempt to study about aiding and abetting suicide and instigation of suicide in this country. The research shows that abetting suicide is the sentence for the people fail to commit mass suicide. Surely there were the cases that someone offers the suicide to receive money and induce people to commit suicide with fake advices but in fact, aid and abet suicide criminals are suicide attempters him/herself and there was no difference with dead people who were classified as victims. In other words, aid and abet suicide criminals could be the other victims and they also belong to the high-risk group when it comes to the suicide.
Although the crime of aid and abet suicide has different characteristic with other crimes, this is actually dealing with the same as other crimes in the criminal justice system. In other words, the criminal justice system focused on punishing offenders more than identifying who the offenders are so whether he/she get punished or not, they are being unattended in a society where repeating the attempts of suicide are possible.
Therefore, it is important to focus on the reason of attempting suicide and the way of living after failing suicide for those people rather than the punishment on the aid and abet suicide criminals and suspects. These criminals are usually released through the suspension of prosecution and return to the society as they have likely gotten probation from trials. In this case of delaying indictment, it is necessary to help the criminals/suspects to have counselling of suicide prevention center or mental health center just like the one of the domestic violence criminals now, and it is essential to approach those people with preventing suicide counselling and offer the welfare service by using order to attend lectures during the suspension of prosecution.
