Cooperation in Criminal Justice in East Asia Region and Towards AsiaJust Program

Abstract

This study identifies the outcome of the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC) projects related to the technical assistance for cooperation in criminal justice in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, such as the study on mutual legal assistance with the Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Towards AsiaJust Program, suggesting the relevant tasks for further studies.

In Chapter 2, the study introduces the Regional Programme Framework (2009-2012) of the UNODC Regional Centre for East Asia and the Pacific and the five thematic sub-programmes of its Regional Programme for Southeast Asia 2014-2017.
In Chapter 3, the study analyzes the achievements of the Towards AsiaJust Programme, classifying each stage of the programme as follows: the stage of development and introduction from 2009 to 2010; the stage of implementation from 2011 to 2012; and the stage of follow-up in 2013. In Chapter 4, the results of the relevant mission and its follow-up in 2014 and 2015, and the 3rd Senior Officials Workshop on Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition in East Asia and the Pacific are discussed.
In Chapter 5, the study examines the overall results of the KIC projects for cooperation in criminal justice in Southeast Asia and the Pacific regions and suggests both the direction and the assignment of the future follow-up projects of the Towards AsiaJust Programme.
