The 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice

The Fourteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will be held under the theme, “Advancing crime prevention, criminal justice and criminal justice” between 7 and 12 March 2021 in Kyoto, Japan. Originally planned to take place in April 2020, the Congress was decided to be postponed to the above date due to the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. As previously, Member States are expected to adopt the Kyoto Declaration at the Congress. During the Congress, between 10 and 11 March, KIC will co-host Workshop 4: Current crime trends, recent developments and emerging solutions in particular new technologies as means for and tools against crime with UNODC (the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and NIJ (The National Institute of Justice of the U.S. Department of Justice). The workshop will the following issues: (a) discussing methodologies and patterns used in the commission of crimes involving the use of technology; (b) exploring ways in which criminal justice authorities can better prevent, detect, and combat such crimes; (c) taking stock of national regulatory standards in place and discuss potential legislative adjustments to address emerging needs and challenges; (d) identifying good practices and experiences in the successful investigation and prosecution of crime involving the use of technology; (e) discussing emerging trends and future directions in the use of technology against crime; (f) assessing the human rights implications of the use of technology against crime; (g) promoting dialogue on training needs to make more effective use of technology against crime; (h) exchanging information and experiences on existing gaps and challenges in international cooperation involving electronic evidence; (i) assessing the impact of public-private partnerships in preventing and addressing the crimes.
