The KIC was the first place of UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov’s visit to Korea from January 30 to 31, 2013. The KIC members including President of the KIC, Prof. em. Dr. jur Il-Su KIM had a special meeting with Mr. Yury Fedotov and discussed 『Virtual Forum against Cybercrime』 and 『Towards AsiaJust』, which are the two main projects with the cooperation of the UNODC. At this meeting, Mr. Fedotov emphasized on the collaborative process for the enhancement of the criminal justice system in the Asia region. He anticipated the KIC to take the lead to implement a sound criminal justice system in this region and conduct the project of 『Towards AsiaJust』 as an on-going project for another 3-4 years. In his reply to Mr. Fedotov, the KIC President, Prof. em. Dr. jur Il-Su KIM introduced the 『Virtual Forum against Cybercrime』 as the educational program for the judicial and law enforcement officials in the Asian region and the clearing house on the of cybercrime information, which will lay the strong foundations for further development of KIC research projects in cybercrime. The President also focused on the necessity of a proper crime statistics research institute based on the close cooperation with UNODC, highly appreciating UN Survey on Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems called 『UN-CTS』. “The KIC is willing to become a hub crime statistics research institute in the Asian region, which is followed by the example of Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico,” he added. UNODC Executive Director said UNODC will take “Rule of Law” and “Access to Justice” into consideration as the 2015 UNODC’s two main projects and will address the illegal drugs, poor public health and a lack of education in Asian developing countries. He encouraged the KIC to provide continuous support for the UNODC activities as a UNODC partner research institute.
