On August 3, KICJ and the Korea Coast Guard signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperative research for policy development in maritime security. The ceremony was held at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Seoul.

With new amendments in the Coast Guard Act following the overall changes in investigative authority in February 2020, there is an increasing need to adapt to changes in the legal framework in the area of criminal justice and legal policy research in maritime law and security. Both institutions agreed to strengthen their cooperation network and fully support each other in mutual capacity building.

Moreover, they discussed installing a policy research council on maritime security consisting of high-level officials from both institutions, and explored the possibility of joint research projects and personnel exchanges such as lecture programs for Coast Guards.
