Mr. KIM Han Kyun, an associate fellow of the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC), participated in the First Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Council for Juvenile Justice, held by the International Juvenile Justice Observatory (IJJO), Bangkok, Thailand, on June 14, 2012. The meeting was held under the theme of ‘An Asia-Pacific Strategy on Juvenile Justice’ and Kim took part in as a faciliator of the Session 2, ‘Juvenile Justice Policies and Answers, from Theory to Practice: Towards Minimum Common Guidelines’. The session covered various themes such as ‘Laws, trial and sentencing,’ ‘Condition of detentions,’ ‘Risks of violence against children during detention,’ and ‘Complains mechanisms’. Inshik Sim. Criminal Justice Researcher of the KIC gave a presentation on “UNODC Regional Programme Framework on the rights of the Child” and “International Legal Framework and Challengs on Juvenile Justice” on behalf of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Centre for East Asia and the Pacific, Thailand. He is now working at the UNODC as a representative of the KIC. The organizer asks the KIC to take part in this international conference annually as an expert to promote further development and reform of juvenile justice in Asia and the other regions. It is expected that this conference will be a meaningful venue for KIC and other participants to make a contribution to juvenile justice. The main objective of the meeting is to contribute to the transition process of actualizing the results derived from the council into practical and concrete Juvenile Justice. These documents may be utilized in ways to promote advocacy as well as for the training of the judiciary and law enforcement officials, civil society and community-based organizations. The IJJO as the host of the First Meeting of the Asian Pacific Council for Juvenile Justice is cooperating with many other institutes to bring about action-oriented counter measures for juvenile justice.
