KIC announced its blueprint for workshop to 2020 UN Crime Congress

The five delegates of the Korean Institute of Criminology headed by Dr. In Sup Han, President of the institute, attended the 2018 Autumn Programme Network of Institute (PNI) Coordination Meeting and its attendant seminar on preparation for the Fourteenth UN Crime Congress held in Tokyo, Japan on December 12th and 13th, 2018, respectively. The coordination meeting has been held biannually in May and December to coordinate joint activities of eighteen member institutes of the UN Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network, organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). During this year’s coordination meeting hosted by the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute (UNAFEI), one of the oldest members of the network based in Tokyo, Japan, the KIC delegates had an opportunity to share its latest updates with the fellow institutes. At the meeting, Dr. In Sup Han made his first debut as President of the KIC to the PNI institutes. He introduced the recent activities of KIC, which includes hosting the fifth KIC International Forum entitled, “Anti-Corruption Reform for a Transparent Society: Experiences and Lessons.” Nothing that the next year would mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of KIC, President Han introduced three major activities planned to celebrate the milestone, of which are publishing a compendium of about 1,200 research and hosting two anniversary conferences on the themes of “Criminal Justice Human Dignity and Values” and “Evidence-based Criminology for Social Safety and Human Security.” At the seminar held next day at Japan’s Ministry of Justice building, Dr. Jea Hyen Soung, Deputy Director of the KIC’s International Cooperation Center, made a presentation on the progress KIC made in organizing Workshop (d) entitled, “Current crime trends, recent developments, and emerging solutions, in particular new technologies as means for and tools against crime” to the Fourteenth UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to be held in Kyoto, Japan in April, 2020. Dr. Soung briefed the fellow institutes on preparatory activities that KIC undertook in the course of the year, including the completion of discussion guide for regional preparatory meetings and the ongoing consultation with the NIJ, AIC, and TIJ on co-hosting and cooperating on organizing the workshop.
