The Towards AsiaJust Programme (TAJ) organized a workshop on Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) on 11 - 12 July, 2012, in Bangkok, titled Senior-level Workshop on Mutual Legal Assistance in East Asia and the Pacific. Attended by representatives and senior-level practitioners from nine ASEAN Member States - Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Viet Nam - and Japan and the Republic of Korea, the workshop aimed to break down the legal and technical barriers in rendering MLA and to explore measures to build an effective regional MLA regime. The workshop was concluded by adopting “Report of the Meeting on Senior-level Workshop on Mutual Legal Assistance in East Asia and the Pacific,” which incorporates contents on legal and technical issues and challenges in rendering MLA as well as commitments of the participants in facilitating effective MLA practices in the region. The workshop is part of a series of efforts made by TAJ to build a network among officers working for criminal justice in the region by enhancing their mutual understanding.
