4th Annual Conference of the Asian Criminological Society was held

The 4th Annual Conference of the Asian Criminological Society (ACS), co-organized by the Asian Criminological Society and the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC), was held from August 20th to 22nd. The theme for the conference was “Development and Security; Rethinking Crime and Criminal Policies in Asia.” Distinguished figures and eminent scholars and practitioners in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice attended the conference including Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand, the Chairperson of the 21st Session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. Emeritus Professor Dr. Il-Su Kim, President of the KIC, opened the conference. He said, "This conference is designed to provide a forum for eminent scholars and practitioners from not only Asia but from across the globe to share, exchange and review each other's works and ideas on how criminal policies can lead to security and ultimately to development." Keynote addresses were delivered by Her Royal Highness Princess, LEE, Jae Sang, Chair Professor of the Ewha Law School, Steven F. Messner, President of American Society of Criminology, Marcel A. Niggli, President of Criminological Society of the German-Speaking Countries. The speakers put emphasis on the role of society and importance of transnational and international cooperation to promote security, justice, and development. The UNODC Regional Centre for East Asia and the Pacific was present at the conference to raise awareness among participants on its work and the forthcoming TOCTA (Transnational Organized Crime Threat Assessment - due to be launched during the fourth quarter of 2012). Mr. Gary Lewis, the Regional Representative of UNODC East Asia and the Pacific, delivered a speech entitled "Responding to the human security threat from Transnational Organized Crime in East Asia and the Pacific," at the conference. His observations pointed to recent trends in the growth of transnational organized crime in East Asia and the Pacific and what the international community can do to respond. On the second and the last day of the conference, scholars, practitioners and participants presented their ideas and works at session. The conference provided good chances to all participants from Asia and across the world to share their ideas and works. The next year’s conference is scheduled to be held in Mumbai, India.
